Dartmouth – the Jewel of South Devon
This historic maritime port is situated at the mouth of the river Dart. Home to the Britannia Royal Naval College, a commanding building which overlooks the whole town and river. The town has a nautical charm and fascinating history, reflected in its architecture, including the well-known Butterwalk, Bayards Cove where the Pilgrim Fathers sailed from and Warfleet Creek where ships gathered to fight the Armada.
Dartmouth is well known for its choice of excellent restaurants, especially The Seahorse and Rockfish run by celebrity chef, Mitch Tonks, and Restaurant Angelique, owned by Alan Murchison. The pretty town streets house a unique collection of galleries and individual shops.
If you love the water Dartmouth offers a variety of regular boat trips, including harbour cruises, trips to Totnes, Dittisham and Greenway – the house and gardens of famous crime writer, Agatha Christie.
There is a lovely selection of walks from the town including the South West Coastal Footpath and the Dart Valley Trail.
Whatever time of year you choose to visit there are local festivals and events – ranging from the Music Festival in May, outdoor theatre and Dartmouth Regatta in August, the Food Festival in October and Candlelit Dartmouth in December.
